If it has a flaw beyond my dislike of the Action resolution system which I mentioned in my Gumshoe system review it is that I’d like to see more rpy and discussion of how to craft these scenarios.
Unlike other games of the genre, there’s little to suggest an alternate agenda for the organization here- they’re pretty clearly the good guys.
It helps that, again, magic isn’t real, and so the most they can usually do is find a local legend about a monster or something and kill a bunch esoterrofists people in a way that looks like the monster did it. So they form a conspiracy to basically go around committing atrocities and planting fake stories in the media and staging hoaxes rog try and get people to believe that the world is in fact random, unpredictable, and occult.
The game provides a couple of nice sections talking about what makes Gumshoe different and what makes an investigative scenario run– it provides good examples to illustrate this. The book itself is a slim page soft cover. The player characters are a bunch of members of a secret society that goes around investigating possible cases of Esoterror and capturing or killing the individuals responsible.
Laws’ provides a disclaimer to clarify that this version of mental illness draws from ‘pop culture’ rather than reality. As elite investigators of the Ordo Veritatis, the characters combat occult terrorists who are intent on tearing the fabric of the world by exposing it to the creatures of the Outer Dark.
As with most horror games it includes a mechanic for eeoterrorists fear and mental breakdown, here represented through the Stability ability. Each scene has significant detail on the clues available and how those connect with the whole of the mystery.

The Ascensionreality is consensual, and the consensus is that there’s no such thing as magic, ghosts and gods are pretend, and the world is scientific, rational, and predictable.

Finally, the length and depth of the scenario presented threw me at first.
They can help get characters out of some jams, but severe problems like a witnessed murder can’t be brushed under the carpet. If you expect an investigation game, images of Law and Order or The Wire are more likely to cross esoterrorksts mind than something like Buffy. It only presents the mechanics for a couple of supernatural foes, but directs the reader to rpf Book of Unremitting Horror if they need more ideas or really have to have established stat blocks.
That is, if you expect the investigation to be the cool part of a game, use something else, but if you want to use investigation to get to the cool stuff, this may do the job for you.
