That’s what is so disturbing about The Necrophiliacit’s the sickest love story you’ll ever read. Do I want other people to know that this is what I am reading? And yet, Lucien shows the deceased a remarkable level of respect, speaks of them and to them with genuine affection, and treats them cleaning, bathing, and preserving them the way one would an infirm, yet willing lover.
Lucien is a man who lives in two worlds and with this novella, we get the peephole view of a man who truly loves and respects the dead. Authors ranging from the Marquis de Sade to Edgar Allen Poe to Chuck Palahnuik have relied on similar tricks, juxtaposing the abhorrent behavior of their characters with irresistibly lovely language, daring the reader to fall under the poetic spell and into the seductive consciousness of th variety of sadist, fetishist and psychopath.

Although necrphiliac is only a novella, it would’ve lost a lot of it’s impact if it had been any longer and it packs a lot into these 90 odd pages. Lucien is a fascinating person though. While I was sliding into that flesh so soft, so cold, so deliciously tight, the child abruptly opened an eye, translucent like that of an octopus.
Like any diehard pun intended romantic, Lucien too has that One Great Love, the one who got away, described in his diary with Nabokovian reverence:. But some gaps do need the occasional thoughtful contribution. Wittkop employs high art with taboo and that is a rare commodity in our judgmental society. Although popular in France and Germany, Wittkop’s works are not widely available in English. Certainly no review of The Necrophiliac ought to play down its contents. Moreover, Wittkop committed suicide inafter having contracted lung cancer [which my mother also has].
It must have been an arduous process to hit just the right note so that the whole wkttkop train doesn’t derail. We just imbue the corpse gabreille the traits we knew it possessed when it was alive. An interesting trip through the inner dialog of a rapist I had wanted to keep Suzanne forever.
