It andresw downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview – to see if I’d mesh with their “special” clientele. As with all anthologies I read, I also found a couple of new authors that I didn’t know that much about – but find that their work is worth looking into!

Green A little weird with the sexbot and all, but still a nice little story from the Nightside since we get hed peak into Deadboy’s past.


Which is slightly outrageous and disgraceful and scandalous and stuff, since this is an Ilona Andrews story. He works for an insurance company and when a woman is murdered by her husband he and his partner are assigned to carry out the retribution clause in her life insurance policy within 11 hours, before the man is set to surrender to authorities.

There Will Be Demons – Lori Handeland This story is part of the Phoenix Chronicles which is a ilonaa I hadn’t heard of before but am definitely going to have to check out now. That said, I’m still interested in reading more in the Shadowfae Chronicles series.


Solved: Hex Appeal

There were a few I thought were pretty good, but nothing outstanding. Not a total loss I picked up this anthology because I’d heard about it from somewhere and thought it might be an interesting sampler for a collection of today’s better urban fantasy authors. Chloe Neill Narrated by: I really don’t know what was the point of reading this story. I was sucked in from the beginning.

Holly’s Balm – Rachel Caine While I liked this story it didn’t quite manage to capture my attention as much as the first two did. Of course, not all vampires like this meddling, and one night, things really don’t go their way.

Maybe it’s because she didn’t kill the first person she fed on? Running the gamut from demons and werewolves to zombies and black magic, these whodunits crackle with otherworldly secrets, making for a noir collection with an extra set of fangs. What does that mean? Loved it when I could recognize a character from a series! Andreds testament to the talent of this writing duo that I can read a short story about characters I’ve never met, with only a brief mention to how they are connected to the world of Kate Daniels, and still be fully engaged andrewz enjoy the read.
