What is clear is that the version the reader develops brove reveal how noble or sordid, simple or complex, his or her view of human nature is. First, Tajomaru lies on his confession because he wants to remain as a man who fought for justice and beat a samurai, not as a notorious brigand; he wants to be remembered this way as a strong and just hero. Simplicity is ever so complex.
I would definitely recommend this short story, which is very similar to the Kurosawa film in the main particulars of the case and how it is revealed. If you haven’t read it yet, akutqgawa, I’m telling you to read it right now and you will never regret it.
