We see a change in him, as the once energetic and warm Ned, slowly starts feeling tired and cold, and climbs out of the pool, instead of hoisting himself up.
Looking overhead he saw that the stars had come out, but why should he seem to see Andromeda, Cepheus, and Cassiopeia? Whatever the case, it is clear that alcohol has abetted his descent into ruination. Why on Earth would a man want to swim from one end of a county to the other? Nobody said anything, but the colonel was never asked again. Or it may be a surreal manifestation of delirium tremens.
