Unlike a lot of other books these days, this series is clean and wholesome, and full of serious situations where the protagonists must show moral magk and character in order to champion their causes. But I am so glad I re-read this again – aside from giving it another star, It is a little darker than the other Sorino books, but it still has the old sweet scent of Narnia – but a wilder, tangier scent – it feels different from all the other Narnia books.
It also introduces the characters of Jadis who will become the White Witch, Digory who will be Professor Kirke, and it also explains the famous lamp post in Nnarnia and the wardrobe through which the passage to Narnia was secured. As the only survivor left in her world, she placed herself in an enchanted sleep that would only be broken by someone ringing the bell. Obviously that won’t be everyone’s reason for reading it, but I had a not-very-strict Christian upbringing and have studied the Old Magk in a university course during my undergrad, so I am really fascinated by it all!
